City needs help counting bicycles, pedestrians in September

The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and the City of Lawrence are looking for volunteers to manually count bicycles and pedestrians at several locations across the city next month. Bicycle and pedestrian counts will take place from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 10 and from 9:45 a.m. to noon and 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 14. Rain dates have been scheduled for Sept. 15 and 17. Those interested in volunteering for one or all of the scheduled count times are required to attend a training session, either 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 8, to be taught the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project method. Volunteers trained in 2010 are not required to attend training in 2011. Immediate needs

• Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers to help with its annual fundraising event, “Meals on Wheels 2011 Premiere.” The event will take place Sept. 29 at Maceli’s, and several volunteers are needed to help throughout the day with setup prior to the event, checking people in at the event, assisting with the silent and live auctions, and then cleanup at the end of the event. • GaDuGi SafeCenter is seeking volunteers to help with its upcoming fundraisers: Swingin’ for Survivors golf tournament and Shoppin’ for Survivors silent auction. Both events are on Sept. 17; golfing is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the auction is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks and at various times throughout the day and evening. • Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association has an immediate need for a volunteer to help with once-weekly yard and garden maintenance. Depending on the time of year and need, duties could include watering and weeding a small garden, tidying the yard, trimming bushes, cleaning gutters or shoveling snow. • Just Food is seeking volunteers to fulfill various positions, such as data entry assistant, food collection driver, home delivery volunteer, office assistant, warehouse client assistant and warehouse food assistant.
