Free State softball camp: The Free State softball and 5 Tool Softball School will host camp for grades 4-8 on Sundays beginning Aug. 21 at Free State High. Positions camps as well as a pitcher-catcher camps are available. For information contact FSHS coach Lee Ice at ice@sunflower.com
Hawk Hundred trail run: The Lawrence Trail Hawks are hosting Lawrence’s first-100-mile foot race on the North Shore Trails at Clinton Lake on Sept. 10-11.
The Hawk Hundred features four, 23-mile loops on Clinton Lake’s rocky, root-bound North Shore trail system, with an eight-mile out-and-back at the end. Runners will have 32 hours to complete the course, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
The race will be run old school with extremely limited support for runners. Water will be provided on the course, along with notebooks where runners sign in to keep track of how many laps they’ve completed.
Because of the limited support and because of the many unknowns this first race presents, entrance is only open to runners who have completed a 100-mile or longer race in the allotted time since 2009.

Kaw Valley soccer tournament: The 2011 Kaw Valley Cup soccer tournament will be September 16-18 in Lawrence. The tournament is open to Divisions 2-5, Gold and Silver, U9 to U14, Boys and Girls. Registration fees are: $445 for U9 and U10 (six vs. six); $475 for U11 and U12 (eight vs. eight); $500 U13 and U14 (11 vs. 11). Parking is now included in registration fees. Family Promise golf: Former Kansas University men’s basketball player Wayne Simien and Cindy Self, wife of KU basketball coach Bill Self, are co-chairs for the third-annual Family Promise Golf Tournament on Sept. 19 at Alvamar Country Club. The four-person scramble has special rules that ensure a 4 1/2 hour round. Registration fee of $200 per player includes lunch and dinner plus admission for two for the Auction Party on Sept. 18. Aquahawks results: Several Lawrence Aquahawks competed in the Central Zone Championships August 5-7 in Topeka. Swimmers making finals in the top eight were Jordan Portela, 12, Michael Andrew, 12 and Courtney Caldwell, 14. Portela broke five team records finishing 11th overall in high point standing. Andrew won the 11-12 boys high point award and broke three Missouri Valley LSC records. Caldwell acquired two Grand Prix cuts at the meet and finished tied for fourth in high point standings. Also participating in the meet were Kara Krannawitter, Eliza Anderson, Elizabeth Rudman and Michaela Andrew.
Sparks expands: Lawrence Sparks Basketball Association, founded in 2009 as a mentoring program for fourth- to seventh-grade girls, is expanding also to include girls through 12th grade. The program works with area student athletes on basketball fundamentals and skills improvement; provides tutoring services for those at risk or needing extra support; involves the students in community activities (fundraisers, community service, social events, motivational speakers, etc). Shoreline Shuffle: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the third-annual Shoreline Shuffle 5K Trail run Sept. 24 on Clinton Lake’s North Shore Trails. The Shoreline Shuffle begins and ends at Shelter 4, Campground One, in Clinton

Hughes in Leadville 100: Dan Hughes of Sunflower Bike Shop finished the Leadville 100 in Colorado, a 103-mile cycling race that starts and finishes in Leadville, in 8 hours, 35 minutes and 11 seconds. He finished in 159th place among 1,276 competitors. He finished two hours, 11 minutes and 33 seconds behind winner Todd Wells.
Dr. Bob Run: The second annual Dr. Bob 5K Run/Jog/Walk will take place Sept. 17 at Rim Rock Farm. The event, which begins at 8 a.m., is presented by the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences in the KU School of Education. Horseshoe runner-ups: Wynne Mihura of Lawrence placed second in the A class, while Burl Cox Jr. of Norman, Okla., took second in the B class at the Summer Heat Open Horseshoe Tournament on Aug. 13 in Belleville.
Drag winners: Blaine and Ashley Miller won their age divisions of the NHRA Div. 5 Junior Dragster Championships Aug. 5-7 at Eddyville Raceway Park in Eddyville, Iowa. Blaine won the 10-12-year-old division and Ashley the 8-9-year-old division. It was the first time a brother and sister won the championships.

3-on-3 Hoops League: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State coach Bryan Duncan will be offering a 3-on-3 basketball league this fall for girls enrolled in grades 4-8. The league will be split up into a fourth-/fifth-/sixth-grade division and a seventh-/eighth-grade division. Each team will play four 10 minute games a night. Girls basketball workouts: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State High girls coach Bryan Duncan will host fall basketball workouts for girls in grades 4-8. The workouts will be at FSHS and will be on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:45 p.m. The workouts will begin September 14 and run through October 12. Fox hole-in-one: Steve Fox recorded a hole-in-one Wednesday on the eighth hole at Alvamar Country Club. Fox used a pitching wedge to ace the 127-yard hole. Witnesses were: Dick Hale, Bill Shunk and Chip Blaser.
