Voting issues

To the editor:

No one should be surprised that the new Kansas law that requires “proof of citizenship” to register to vote will be a big factor in limiting the number of registered voters in our state. It is unfortunate that the issues which were so clearly laid out in your April 25 article weren’t delineated months ago. For example, why were potential costs to married women and identify theft previously ignored?

But what is still missing is the analysis of why such a law would be so desirous of the radical right. That analysis is clear and unforgiving: Every study of U.S. election results indicates that the smaller the voter turnout, the more likely it is that radical right candidates and radical right causes will be voted into office or enacted. That is the kind of information that voters need in order to be able to influence their elected officials to defeat such measures. Has anybody talked to the ACLU yet?
