The Lawrence Sertoma Club will sponsor the State Championship BBQ Cookoff on May 6-7, at Broken Arrow Park, 31st and Louisiana streets. Teams will arrive that Friday and set up to cook on Saturday.

The public is invited to a breakfast served by the Wakarusa Fire Department from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. May 7. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public can taste samples from the teams and choose the People’s Choice winner.

Forty-eight teams will compete in four categories: brisket, pork, ribs and chicken. Judges will award titles of grand champion, reserve champion and first through 10th places.

Proceeds from the barbecue will stay in Lawrence and Douglas County.

A fun time, a great cause, and tasty BBQ! A great deal of the proceeds assist in hosting a summer camp presented by the Schiefelbusch Clinic. The camp is for children with speech, hearing, and/or language challenges . Many of these kids wouldn't have the opportunity to attend a summer camp without this camp being available.

$6 for People's Choice (about 20? samples of team BBQ) or $6 for pancake feed (in conjunction with Wakarusa fire dept)
