Lawrence man charged with beating infant, 6-year-old

Douglas County prosecutors have charged a Lawrence man with beating two children, including a 6-week-old infant.

Bradley W. Ford, 29, was charged Tuesday with one count of aggravated battery and two counts of child abuse.

Nicole Romine, an assistant Douglas County district attorney, said during Ford’s first appearance Tuesday that the aggravated battery charge stems from “intentionally causing great bodily harm” to the infant on Sept. 20.

She said Ford faces the two child abuse charges for beating the infant on Sept. 24 and a 6-year-old child two days earlier.

It’s unclear from court documents what the relationship is between the children and the suspect. Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson declined to comment on that or the children’s injuries.

Branson said the incidents allegedly occurred at Ford’s home in the 200 block of Pinecone Drive, southeast of 19th Street and Haskell Avenue. Lawrence police arrested Ford early Monday at the residence.

Judge Pro Tem James George agreed with prosecutors’ request to set Ford’s bond at $100,000, cash or surety. George ordered Ford, if released, not to return to the home or have contact with victims or witnesses.

Ford is scheduled to appear again in court at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 in front of Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone.
