Emergency response crews extract a woman during a water rescue Friday on the north side of the Kansas River.

Rescue workers pulled a woman from a concrete platform underneath the Kansas River dam Friday afternoon.

About 1:25 p.m., Lawrence resident Dennis Findley was sitting along the levee when he said he saw a woman, who was wearing a dress and heels and carrying a purse, walk into the river.

The woman entered the water above the dam, went over the dam and then was pulled back into the current, Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Lewis said.

When the woman looked like she was unaware of her surroundings and having a hard time balancing and standing up, Findley and a friend asked a nearby cyclist, Erin Blocher, to call 911.

Blocher said that by the time police arrived, the woman had crawled underneath the dam.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence Police Department all assisted with the rescue.

After the woman was pulled from the dam, she walked up an embankment and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The woman didn’t suffer any injuries, but remains at LMH for observation.

The woman was uncooperative with sheriff’s deputies, Lewis said. The sheriff’s office won’t make a decision on filing criminal trespassing charges until officers interview the woman.

In response to the incident, the city of Lawrence Public Works Department put up a temporary plastic fence on the north side of the river. The fence is around the spillway.
