Ecological truth

To the editor:

The Sept. 14 edition of the Journal-World reported “Melting sea ice forces walruses ashore” as worthy of the front page. Thank goodness for publications like the Tucson Citizen, which reported that this is not unusual and backed up their story with a report from the Alaska Fish & Game Department. Apparently, this is a seasonal event occurring when the Arctic sea ice is at its summer minimum. The winter maximums of Arctic sea ice have actually increased in recent years.

Why does the Lawrence Journal-World purposefully seek to misinform its readers in matters of anthropogenic global warming and attempt to keep us in fear? Is the editor in agreement with John P. Holdren, who together with Paul Ehrlich, who wrote in “Ecosystems” (1973), that de-development is necessary to save the planet? These same authors also promoted population controls like compulsory abortion in order to curb human population growth. Perhaps if these goals are vital, then misinforming the public and keeping us in fear is necessary. However, I would invite you to consider a world where truth and contentment are more important.
