A proposal to allow more sidewalk drinking areas in downtown Lawrence will be up for discussion by city commissioners today.

Commissioners will consider changing the city code that governs which businesses can have sidewalk hospitality areas. Currently, bars that have an outside deck or patio are not allowed to have the sidewalk areas.

But the owner of Louise’s, 1009 Mass., have asked commissioners to change that provision.

Staff members think the change would open the possibility of about seven to 10 bars that currently do not qualify for sidewalk seating areas to have them in the future.
