Lawrence man arrested after battering girlfriend with full beer can

A 20-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Monday afternoon accused of throwing full cans of beer at his girlfriend early Saturday morning.

However, prosecutors had not yet filed any charges Tuesday, and the man was released from the Douglas County Jail Tuesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man was initially arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in the 1100 block of Stone Meadows Drive for an incident that occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Lawrence police Sgt. Dave Hubbel said the man’s live-in girlfriend had a friend over who had some beer. The man demanded beer from the friend, was denied, and then took the beer anyway. The girlfriend intervened on her friend’s behalf. Hubbel said the man then battered his girlfriend with full cans of beer.
