Former victim now suspect in robbery

A 23-year-old Lawrence man turned himself in to police Wednesday in connection with an armed robbery that happened earlier this year. The suspect was initially named a victim in the case.

On Jan. 24, a man with a handgun entered the Sonic restaurant at 1003 N. Third St. He stole an undisclosed amount of cash as well as an iPhone from one of the employees.

Three Sonic workers were listed as victims in the case, including the man who is now in jail accused of also being involved in the robbery.

Several months after the crime, Lawrence police arrested Antonio Douglas, 26, Lawrence, and booked him into jail on allegations of aggravated robbery and criminal damage. According to court documents, on June 24, Douglas pleaded guilty to one count of robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery. He was sentenced to more than two years in jail, three years of probation and ordered to pay restitution.

Although it may have seemed the case was closed when Douglas learned of his punishment, there was another suspect.

The 23-year-old man was booked into the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday on two counts of aggravated robbery.

Attempts to reach a Sonic district manager for comment were unsuccessful.
