A 33-year-old Lawrence man has pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and other charges after he disobeyed a judge’s bond condition to stay away from a victim in the case.

Damien L. Shields entered pleas Friday to charges of aggravated battery, violation of a protective order and two counts of domestic battery, according to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office.

Prosecutors said Shields committed an act of domestic violence and aggravated battery on April 10. Police were called after the female victim left the residence seeking help for her injuries.

A judge already had ordered Shields not to have contact with the victim because he faced a domestic battery charge in connection with a Dec. 29 incident against the woman. In that case, he was accused of pulling a clump of the victim’s hair out during an argument.

Douglas County District Judge Sally Pokorny is scheduled to sentence Shields Nov. 1.

According to a 2000 study which interviewed the former and current partners of male batterers referred to batterer programs by the court:
41% of participants reported that the men committed a re-assault during the 30-month follow-up period.
Nearly 2/3 of the first time re-assaults occurred in the first 6 months.
About 20 percent of the men repeatedly re-assaulted their partners and account for most of the reported injuries.
