A 25-year-old Haskell Indian Nations University student has been released from jail after he was initially arrested as a suspect in an alleged sexual assault last weekend.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said Tuesday morning that his office was waiting on more information before making a decision about whether to file charges. He said he could not comment further.

Lawrence police were called about 7:15 a.m. Saturday to Roe Cloud Hall, where a 21-year-old female student alleged the 25-year-old male student had sexually assaulted her earlier.

Police arrested the man Saturday afternoon on charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, criminal restraint and theft.

According to Douglas County Jail records, the suspect was released Monday afternoon.

The Journal-World generally does not name sexual assault suspects unless they are convicted.

I was raped at Haskell while I was going to school there. No one cares. It was by a boy that had family working at Haskell and he was supposed to be the good guy.
Nothing will happen to this boy if the rape really did happen.

Good for the DA to take the time to investigate thoroughly before charging.

Some may recall a rape trial last year in Judge Martin's courtroom in which the jury found the 19 year old defendant not guilty. The defense produced a credible theory, with supporting evidence, that the sex was consensual.

The 19 year old male still has a rape charge to explain away on every job interview. Even when found not guilty, the charge remains on the record.

If he did it and it looks like something happened, my wife and I hope he does not just get to walk. Seems like Haskell is good at letting their problems walk right out the door. We wonder if he is being held in Lawrence, until police make a decision? Most college kids are not from Lawrence.

It's possible he volunteered a DNA test and they are waiting for results. In that case, he can only be held so long, and I think the test takes some time. (unlike any episode of law and order where results are instaneous)

"Police arrested the man Saturday afternoon on charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, criminal restraint and theft". What more information do they need?
