One Lawrence teacher is looking to rally the community in backing a video she made explaining how she would give away $5,000 to local charities.

Jessica Green, a special education resource teacher at Prairie Park School, is participating in Dave Ramsey’s “The Great Giving Challenge,” which asks people to submit videos proposing how they would give away $5,000.

Green said she would donate $1,000 each to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, Lawrence Meals on Wheels, the Lawrence Community Shelter, Lawrence Humane Society, and Housing and Credit Counseling Inc.

Supporters can vote for Green’s video once a day from now until Nov. 8. The top three videos with the most votes will get $5,000.

This is cool and I hope she wins.

But as an aside I wonder why the headline says: "Lawrence teacher..." If this person was a gas-station attendant would the headline say that? Or would it say: "Lawrence woman..."

What does her being a teacher have to do with this? Nothing. It's another example of portraying teachers as more than they really are. It's time to stop deifying them...it only contributes to the never-ending drain on our tax base to prop up the failed system they represent.
