Stay positive

To the editor:

I am so amazed how the media at any given time tries to think for us. My latest case in point is the Oct. 19 article written by J-W sports editor Tom Keegan. His bold and calculating comments about Turner Gill and his coaching ability were totally off the mark and way premature. More specifically his characterization of Gill being “overmatched as he thus far appears.” Tom has a short memory in that it was not too long ago a coach came to KU with no head coaching experience and made KU an exciting team to watch.

I was on the interview team and felt, and continue to feel, that Mark Mangino is a very talented coach who had a misfortune along the way. Turner Gill has only been on the job for a short time, and there are those who say get rid of them. Come on, give the coach a chance to do what he has done elsewhere as a head coach.

I have been around football all my life, perhaps a bit longer than Tom, and when you listen to Coach Gill talk about football, it is clear he has a vision and has assembled an outstanding group of coaches to ensure KU reaches it goal of a successful football program. Lew Perkins was keen to have seen the talent this coach possesses. It is important to have a positive and supporting mindset as they build this program. Negative distractions are not what one wants to see or hear surrounding this rebuilding effort.
