Only a game

October 19, 2010

To the editor:

I fail to understand how our football team’s loss can presage such doom and deterioration for our entire university and for its “senior positions” of leadership at Kansas University (Saturday Column, Oct. 16).

What may, however, is the sniping and the veiled inuendos directed at our new leadership and at the entire scope, seemingly, of their many difficult undertakings so early in their conscientious efforts.

Lay off, Mr. Simons! It was a game!

It's called saleries are way out of line compared to the common person. Everybody feels they have a right to gripe when someone makes 2 Mil a yr and job performance is poor. Gill is way over his head and Lew only hired him to leave a knife in the bad when he left.

Right, right, but hey, let's not pass up the opportunity to start thinking seriously about getting rid of football? This is a golden opportunity, folks.

Getting rid of Facebook will never happen unless more security issues continue.

You can say that "it's only a game," but consider this: KU has been gradually sliding downhill for over two decades. Sure, there have been and still are pockets of excellence (the success of the Hall Center is one example) and we still enjoy the presence of many outstanding faculty members, but overall our position as the preeminent university in Kansas has clearly slipped from where it once was.

During that time, how much of this has been masked by a consistently winning basketball program that won another National Championship in 2008, and a football program that performed well in the early and mid-90s and thereafter gradually rose high enough to win an Orange Bowl in 2008 and the Insight Bowl the following year? If these sports programs hadn't enjoyed the successes they did over the last two decades, is it possible that more people would have begun to take heed of our gradual slide toward mediocrity, beginning with a clear lack of leadership marked by the revolving-door history of KU's top lieutenants and the continuing deterioration of our relationship with the Kansas legislature, and culminating in the hiring of our current chancellor?

KU football is going to be down for some time. If KU basketball has a relatively down year again, perhaps more alumni will stop resting on their laurels and awaken to the fact that the KU roller coaster has been been going downhill for some time. If they do, the question will be whether they possess the requisite intelligence and courage to reverse the trend.

Its not just a game - its a symptom of overpaid and ineffectual leadership that pervades the entire university.

It's just a game. Mangino was 2-12 his first year here. We've NEVER been as good in football as we are in basketball.Geez, just get over it and move on.

I blame Obama. And Bush.

Sure, neither Obama or Bush had anything to do with this game, but neither did Chancellor Gray-Little. But under Dolph's logic, the KU loss is symptomatic of the poor leadership of the whole country, right?

Justnoticed, Yes, KU could get rid of football, but noticed (pardon the pun) you didn't include hoops. KU hoops program is very very costly. All of um, toss the lot of um, except swimming. I can see it now, more schools drop expensive sports concentrating on swimming and diving.

football success = university success

no football = Marquette = KU - football You can substitute UMKC for Marquette if you wish.

heard anything interesting about Marquette lately?

I'm waiting for the "homeless shelter at hilda's house," come one, come all. But she never offers. It would be nice. They could make a T Bus stop right in front.

Too many yard signs Hilda, you're violating city code.
