Lions top Firebirds at Emporia volleyball tournament

October 17, 2010

— Lawrence High’s volleyball team went 3-3 and Free State went 2-4 at the Emporia High Invitational on Saturday. The Lions held off Free State in their final match of the day in three games (25-23, 23-25, 25-18).

“It was the last game of the day and both teams were tired,” LHS coach Stephanie Magnuson said. “It’s a rivalry and it’s always nice to beat a crosstown rival. Both teams played very hard.”

Lawrence also defeated Emporia (20-25, 25-17, 25-21) and Shawnee Mission Northwest (25-16, 25-17); LHS lost to Shawnee Heights (25-20, 25-19), Washburn Rural (25-21, 25-8) and Junction City (25-17, 25-20).

Free State defeated Pittsburg (25-18, 14-25, 25-20) and Junction City (25-14, 25-13) and lost to Topeka Seaman (25-20, 25-14), Maize (25-13, 25-20), and Emporia (25-16, 25-15).

The Lions (17-15) will return home for Senior Night on Tuesday.
