Douglas County prosecutors Wednesday alleged two Topeka women tried to distract two Lawrence residents as a co-conspirator tried to rob the men.

The robbery attempt ended with a 28-year-old Lawrence man shot and a 25-year-old man being pistol-whipped early Monday in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane.

The details of the shooting came out as prosecutors filed charges in the case against four Topeka residents, including 19-year-old Christopher A. Bush, who is accused of pulling the trigger.

“Any time you have somebody getting shot, we’re going to take it more seriously,” said James McCabria, assistant Douglas County district attorney.

Prosecutors charged Bush, along with Ashley A. Halstead, 22, Desmond J. Jackson, 19, and Rylie R. Musik, 18, each with two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and two counts of attempted aggravated robbery. In addition, prosecutors charged Bush with aggravated battery because they accuse him of shooting the man and for criminal possession of a firearm, because he has a prior juvenile conviction in Shawnee County.

McCabria said prosecutors allege the four defendants hatched a plan to have Musik and Halstead — who had met the victims earlier that night at an undisclosed location — ride in a vehicle with the two Lawrence men to Park Plaza South Apartments. Jackson and Bush would meet them at the apartment complex. The two victims and the defendants did not know one another before Monday night.

Once they made it to the parking lot at the apartment complex around 4:30 a.m., Bush used a handgun to demand money from the two Lawrence men, McCabria said.

Lawrence police have said an argument ensued and the 28-year-old man was shot. The 25-year-old Lawrence man suffered a minor head injury but was not hospitalized. On Wednesday, 28-year-old victim remained in critical but stable condition at a Kansas City-area hospital, said Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman.

Lawrence and Topeka police arrested the four suspects Monday at a Topeka home.

Judge pro tem James George set Bush’s bond at $150,000. He set bond at $100,000 for all three co-defendants.

McCabria said the investigation has revealed three of the defendants — all except for Musik –could be involved in gang-related activities. The defendants will next appear in court Oct. 26.
