Lawrence police have confirmed four Topeka residents are being held in connection with the shooting Monday morning of a Lawrence man outside an apartment complex.

According to Douglas County Jail records, two Topeka women, ages 18 and 22, and two Topeka men, both 19, were arrested on robbery charges Tuesday in Topeka as part of the shooting investigation. One of the men also was arrested on an aggravated battery charge.

Topeka police Lt. Dave Thomas said Lawrence police asked for help in locating suspects in the incident, who they believed were at 2312 S.E. Virginia St. Lawrence and Topeka police officers served a search warrant and arrested the suspects. Topeka police said one of the men surrendered after a three-hour standoff.

The arrests came after Lawrence police spent most of the day following leads into who shot a 28-year-old Lawrence man, found wounded at 4:40 a.m. in a parking lot outside Park Plaza South Apartments in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane. The man was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital for treatment and underwent surgery Monday, said Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Matt Sarna.

In a statement Tuesday morning, Sarna said the man was shot after an altercation and apparent attempted robbery. Investigators also determined a 25-year-old Lawrence man suffered a minor head injury during the altercation. He was not hospitalized.

“The suspects were not known to the victims,” Sarna said.

Police recovered a weapon they believe was used. Lawrence police have not released the names of the victims.

Sarna said on Tuesday morning that the 28-year-old gunshot victim was in critical but stable condition.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said his office will file official charges on Wednesday.

According to police, one of the male suspects was arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery and aggravated battery. The other man and the two women were arrested on conspiracy and aggravated robbery charges.
