Project drags on

To the editor:

We are now getting ready to start our third year of athletic field construction near Lawrence High and Centennial Virtual School. The neighborhood is wondering when Lawrence public schools will finish these projects. Incomplete after two full summer construction seasons:

  1. Perimeter drainage system at LHS football and softball fields. The entire swath of no-man’s land between the perimeter fence and the LHS property line is blocked from reaching the new drainage system by newly placed soil pushed up against the perimeter fence.
  2. Lighting at LHS softball has been tested and does not comply with special use permit requirements. Football lighting remains to be tested to “glare” standards.
  3. Completion of landscaping at LHS.
  4. Completion of landscaping at CVS; 194 total trees and shrubs on development application reduced to 49 from original application.
  5. 51 trees along south side of baseball deleted from plans.
  6. Completion of landscaping at Centennial tennis courts.
  7. Storage shed at southeast corner of softball field at LHS not approved by HRC or shown on development application.
  8. Two bleachers were shown on all development application drawings for the softball field at LHS but three bleachers, one on each side and one at a diagonal behind home plate, are used by LPS but never on approval drawings.

Having spent $19.8 million on construction at Free State and LHS/CVS and more than $2 million in finance costs, not including the recent press box and restrooms, what about the requirements to finish these projects on schedule?
