Kansas City, Mo., man in jail following chase along Interstate 70

A 30-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man is in the Leavenworth County Jail awaiting the filing of formal charges in connection with a car chase Tuesday night that ended in Douglas County.

The high-speed chase started when Kansas City, Mo., officers tried to pull over a car near Gardner Avenue and Chouteau Trafficway. The driver failed to stop, and officers witnessed occupants throwing what they believe was drugs out of the vehicle.

The car slowed enough so two passengers could get out, and they were arrested.

But the driver of the black Kia continued west on Interstate 70. Once the chase entered Kansas, Missouri officers stopped following the car.

In Leavenworth County, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers picked up the pursuit on the Kansas Turnpike, and the vehicle stopped about three miles east of Lawrence after troopers put out stop sticks, Lt. Joe Bott said.

Troopers recovered suspected drugs from the vehicle and sent them to a lab to be tested. Bott said no one was injured in the chase. The suspect was booked into the Leavenworth County Jail on charges of DUI, fleeing and eluding and driving on a suspended license.

He also was booked on a Missouri warrant, but no official charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.
