Humane Society board addresses status of executive director

Meeting Tuesday night, the Lawrence Humane Society board of directors briefly addressed the status of its executive director, who is on administrative leave.

Midge Grinstead has been on administrative leave since early November. Grinstead and Lawrence Humane Society board members repeatedly have refused to talk about why.

Board members have said the issue is a personnel matter. The board announced it made Grinstead a proposal “with our recommendations for how to move forward.”

Emily Peterson, a board member, told the crowd of more than 40 supporters of Grinstead’s that it was the board’s hope that she continue in her current position.

Board members said that Grinstead has received the proposal and is reviewing it and that the board hoped to have the issue resolved as soon as possible.

The 15-member board of directors consists of members elected to three-year terms by the humane society’s members, which include donors and volunteers.

The Lawrence Humane Society receives $256,320 annually from the city of Lawrence and $28,000 each year from Douglas County in support of their activities.
