Five players sign letters of intent with Kansas women’s basketball

Five basketball players signed national letters of intent with Kansas University’s women’s program on Wednesday. They are: Asia Boyd, 6-foot-1 guard, Detroit Renaissance High; Donielle Breaux, 5-10 guard, Elkins High, Missouri City, Texas; Chelsea Gardner, 6-3 forward, DeSoto (Texas) High; Natalie Knight, 5-7 guard, Olathe South; and Catherine Williams, 6-1, Duncanville (Texas) High.

Boyd, ranked 39th by Hoopgurlz.com, averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds for Detroit’s city champs. She chose KU over LSU, Michigan State, Michigan, Miami, South Carolina and UCLA.

“Asia is a big, strong, athletic lefty,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “She can score in a variety of ways, but is also very unselfish. She is also a very strong rebounder.”

Breaux averaged 21.0 points and 3.5 steals as a junior. She chose KU over Missouri and UNC-Wilmington.

“Donielle has played all three guard positions, but will play primarily on the wing here,” Henrickson said. “She is tremendously athletic and versatile.”

Gardner averaged 7.5 points and 5.7 rebounds. She chose KU over Texas and TCU.

“Chelsea is a very skilled, long and athletic in the post,” Henrickson said. “She is excellent in transition as she can really get up and down the court.”

Knight averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 boards in leading her team to the Class 6A state championship. Knight, who has three uncles who played for the KU men’s team, chose KU over Kansas State and Iowa State.

“Natalie is a fantastic playmaker. She doesn’t turn the ball over and knows how to get her teammates involved, but at the same time knows when she needs to take control,” Henrickson said. “We are thrilled to have whom we consider to be the top player in the state of Kansas joining our program.”

Williams averaged 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. She chose KU over Memphis and Kentucky.

“Bunny is very physical in the post,” Henrickson said. “She already has the physical presence and build of a college post player. She has a high basketball IQ and is a good communicator.”
