What a game

To the editor:

Gale Weidner. For nearly 50 years, that name has raised memories of a beautiful fall afternoon gone bad.

We sent a very good Jayhawk football team to Boulder and we dominated most of the game. Led by boys whose names are listed on the north rim of Memorial Stadium, we had high expectations. Then, late in the game, Colorado quarterback Gale Weidner found split end soon to be a Green Bay Packer Boyd Dowler for three late touchdowns and our 20-point lead disappeared.

Doomed to sit through the second half of last Saturday’s game at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium with my 6-year-old granddaughter — who stays to the end — I watched the ghosts go away. Goodbye, Gale. Goodbye, Boyd. Goodbye, Buffaloes.
