What a game

To the editor:

Gale Weidner. For nearly 50 years, that name has raised memories of a beautiful fall afternoon gone bad.

We sent a very good Jayhawk football team to Boulder and we dominated most of the game. Led by boys whose names are listed on the north rim of Memorial Stadium, we had high expectations. Then, late in the game, Colorado quarterback Gale Weidner found split end soon to be a Green Bay Packer Boyd Dowler for three late touchdowns and our 20-point lead disappeared.

Doomed to sit through the second half of last Saturday’s game at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium with my 6-year-old granddaughter — who stays to the end — I watched the ghosts go away. Goodbye, Gale. Goodbye, Boyd. Goodbye, Buffaloes.

Wonderful letter. Welcome catharsis for a loyal KU fan, made all the more so by being with his granddaughter.

Even if KU went a complete season without scoring 1 single point, I can think of one man (and only one) who would proudly still consider himself a KU Football fan. No other person in this city, nation or planet can match this man as far as loyalty and enthusiasm.

That man is former KU coach Don Fambrough (or "Coach Fam" as he is affectionately known.)

Besides the original Kansas Jayhawers, there's probably no one who hates Missouri as much either!
