KU curveball?

To the editor:

Kansas University faculty members are not getting raises. KU buildings and infrastructure are crumbling. KU student services are being cut. And Athletic Director Lew Perkins, who earned $4 million-plus last year, lost upward of $3 million in the illegal ticket scandal because, he says, he was thrown a curveball that he didn’t see coming.

Given that reportedly many others both inside and outside his department knew what was going on, it begs the question: How many more millions per year would Perkins have to get paid to see it coming? Or perhaps he would have seen it coming if he’d been more concerned about what was happening in his department than he was about spending nearly $1 million, which could have been put to much better use elsewhere, to put a local small businessman out of business for selling T-shirts.

It seems that, at the very least, Perkins should make up the $3 million loss out of his own pocket. Perhaps that would help him focus better in the future.
