Degree snub

To the editor:

I forget my source (it was one of my professors), but I understand the University of Kansas at one time gave honorary doctorates but ran into a snag when William Allen White of Emporia declined. His reasoning was that if he wanted a degree he would have stayed long enough to earn it.

KU gives a Distinguished Service Award which is, in my opinion, equivalent to any honorary doctorate. This should probably be considered when changing a tradition.
