Two killed, four injured in accident that temporarily shut down I-70 between Topeka, Lawrence

All lanes reopened as of 5:50 p.m.

Six people were injured in an accident on Interstate 70 between Topeka and Lawrence Wednesday afternoon. Of the six, four were children.

The Kansas Turnpike between Topeka and Lawrence was shut down briefly after a serious accident involving a single vehicle Wednesday afternoon. The accident injured six people, four of them children.

Two adults were killed in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 between Topeka and Lawrence shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday. The accident shut down all traffic on the highway for a period of time.

Six people were in the westbound vehicle when the vehicle lost control and struck a cement pillar. Two parents and four children between the ages of 2 and 10 were in the vehicle. The adults were identified as Mayra Reyes, 25, and Ricardo Lopez, 34, both of Olathe.

The children were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. The man died at the scene and the woman died at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center.

The accident happened near the service station, between mileposts 187 and 188.

Lane closures lasted to varying degrees for nearly two hours, with the last lanes re-opening shortly before 6 p.m.
