Wal-Mart impact

To the editor:

“Badmouthing” Wal-Mart seems to be the popular thing to do these days. According to some, a Wal-Mart will come into a town, compete unfairly, and run out other competitors. If this is true, why does Lawrence seem to be an exception?

At one point in time Wal-Mart was about the only business south of 31st and Iowa. Today we have a Super Target, a Kohls (right next to Wal-mart), Home Depot, and Best Buy … a large list of retailers that have been established after Wal-Mart.

Strangely enough the area around Sixth and Wakarusa (the home of our newest Wal-Mart) seems to be developing with no shortage of Wal-Mart competitors. If the anti-Wal-Mart propaganda were fact, 31st and Iowa as well as Sixth and Wakarusa should be barren wasteland.

I appreciate Wal-Mart’s low prices, our neighbors it employs and the competition it seems to draw.
