Vault by Free State’s Davis 15th in nation this year

Free State senior Drue Davis flashes a smile after clearing 12 feet, 8 inches in the pole vault. Davis set a state record in the event on Friday at the regional track meet in Olathe.

Having already gained state supremacy in the pole vault, Free State senior Drue Davis is apparently making a push for some national notoriety, as well.

According to the national prep track and field website DyeStat.com, Davis’ winning jump of 12 feet, 8 inches in Friday’s Class 6A regional track and field meet ties her for the 15th-best vault in the nation this season.

“I went through the top 14 on that list, and all those kids also had indoor track seasons,” said FSHS coach Steve Heffernan. “So for her to do it with just outdoor is really an accomplishment, because she’s still kind of a newcomer to the sport in a lot of respects.”

Davis needed just one attempt to snap the previous state record of 12 feet, 7 inches, and despite three unsuccessful attempts at 13 feet, said Friday that improving upon her current best — and thus advancing a few spots up the national list — isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Merritt Grace Van Meter of Country Day (La.) High holds the national mark this spring with a jump of 13 feet, 8.25 inches.

“Everyone was really excited,” Davis said of Friday’s performance. “All of my teammates came over and watched. It was a little nerve-wracking; I’m not used to having fans over at pole vault.”

Davis, who won last year’s Class 6A state pole vault title with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches, will attempt to defend her crown during next weekend’s state meet at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium.
