Tax burden

To the editor:

The city commissioners don’t get it! Past commissioners would not allow businesses to come to Lawrence because of creating competition to already established business. Therefore, there is very little to draw shoppers to Lawrence. Now the new commissioners want to increase sales taxes to encourage businesses.

I will not pay 10 or 11 percent sales tax for the privilege to shop in Lawrence. There are very few items that I need to purchase in Lawrence, and the rest I will purchase in Kansas City. The price of gas would have to be prohibitive before I would consider shopping in Lawrence.

Obviously, the commissioners are too wealthy to understand the economic crisis that most Americans are facing today. The city should be working to help their residents, not imposing additional burden on them. This tax increase should be repealed.
