KU could delay commencement, in case of rain

May 14, 2010

With a possibility of rain in the forecast for Sunday, participants in Kansas University’s commencement should check for potential weather delays.

If delays are needed, announcements will be posted at, and at several media outlets, including

Students who have signed up to receive alert notifications on their cell phones will receive text messages if the 2:30 p.m. commencement ceremony is postponed.

If weather begins to clear in the early afternoon, the first attempt to hold a postponed ceremony will be at 4:30 p.m., and graduates should assemble on Memorial Drive at 4 p.m.

If the weather has not cleared for a 4:30 p.m. ceremony, a second attempt would be made at 6:30 p.m., and graduates should assemble at 6 p.m.

The final attempt to hold the ceremony will occur at 9 a.m. Monday. Graduates should assemble at 8:30 a.m. If the ceremony cannot take place on Monday, it will be canceled.

Just cancel it. Give everyone a gift certificate to ride the 16 person pedicab and have the ceremeony downtown on pedicabs.

I thought it use to be moved to Allen Fieldhouse with limited seating. A total cancelation is a poor thing to do.

I really hope we can have it on Sunday!! At 9am on Monday I'll be on my way to Europe! They couldn't possibly fit everyone into the Fieldhouse which is why they don't move it there.

I would be freaking pissed if I went to KU, and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars- and they just CANCELLED my commencement.

You mean, if among thousands of other grads a microburst sniped me from the crowd? The answer is yes, I would be pissed. That is discrimination.

Outdoor graduation at 1:00 p.m. If it's looking bad weather-wise at 11 a.m., then the following goes into effect. Event to be held in Allen Fieldhouse. Divide it into either 3 or 4 ceremonies (by last name...."A-G, H-M..." however you want to break it down) held 2.5 hours apart, starting at 1:30 p.m. (Maybe 3 or 3.5 apart, depending on whether you break it down into 3 or 4 ceremonies.)

These folks have forked over tens of thousands of dollars. Many will be paying back loans for the next few decades of their lives. You do NOT say, "Oh, was raining, and we couldn't figure out any other possible way that we could have a ceremony. Thanks for the cash...bye!"

Brain surgeon. Rocket scientist. KU graduation scheduler. I never knew the last one required the intellectual acumen of the first two...

I didn't even go to my commencement. I didn't fork over thousands of dollars to wear a stupid robe and a silly hat, packed in some place with thousands of people, only of which a very small percentage I've ever met.

My thousands of dollars went towards my education, a piece of paper and the line on my resume.
