Man arrested after parking lot struggle

A 23-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Tuesday night after entering a stranger’s vehicle.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel, the incident occurred about 9:50 p.m. in the 1600 block of Massachusetts Street. Officers were originally called to the scene when bystanders in the Dillons parking lot, 1740 Mass., witnessed the man and a woman struggling.

Hubbel said the man was heavily intoxicated and apparently was trying to find a way home. He had attempted to break into an apartment complex in the 1700 block of New Hampshire Street, breaking a window and cutting his hand. The man then began walking through the Dillons parking lot, trying door handles of various vehicles.

A woman was getting in her vehicle after finishing her shopping. As she put her vehicle in reverse, the drunken man climbed into the back seat. Hubbel said the two exchanged words and the woman decided to get out of the vehicle. As she exited, the man also got out and grabbed the woman around the neck from behind. A struggle ensued and eventually the man ran away.

Hubbel said police located him shortly after the incident. The man was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage and criminal trespassing.
