Statehouse Live: Proposal to make Prairie Spirit Rail Trail a state park advanced to governor

? A hike and bike trail in northeast Kansas will become an official state park under a bill sent to Gov. Mark Parkinson on Tuesday.

The measure would make Prairie Spirit Rail Trail the state’s 25th state park. The trail runs 51 miles between Ottawa and Iola.

The trail is currently state-operated, but the legislation would designate it a state park, which means it would receive additional signage, and be included in state park guides and maps.

The proposal had become entangled in a couple of other parks issues that were more controversial, such as reopening an entrance at Tuttle Creek State Park. But those issues were resolved in other pieces of legislation, supporters of the bill said.
