LHS, FSHS earn tennis berths

? Lawrence High and Free State high schools each had Class 6A state qualifiers Saturday at the regional tennis tournament at Shawnee Mission East’s Harmon Park.

Lawrence High senior Byron Varberg placed fourth individually and earned a berth to state. The top six singles and doubles placers advanced to state.

“He’s been playing well the last couple of weeks,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said. “He’s playing his style of play and becoming more consistent. We set a goal for him to qualify for state. I was pleased he was able to do that.”

Free State’s doubles team of Dravid Joseph and Andrew Craig placed second and also earned a state berth. The duo went 3-1 before falling in the regional final.

The state tournament will begin Friday at Harmon Park.
