FSHS swims 2nd at league
Olathe ? Free State High’s swimming and diving team won five events, and the Firebirds placed second on Saturday at the Sunflower League meet.
Lawrence High placed seventh.
Free State’s 200 medley relay team of Heather Clark, Reilly Moore, Chloe Portela and Morgan Flannigan won in 1:50.89.
Flannigan also won in the 200 free (1:53.73) and 500 free (5:02.75). Flannigan dominated the 500, winning the event by eight seconds.
“It was very impressive. Her goal was to swim a low five minutes,” Free State coach Annette McDonald said. “This is right where she wants to be in getting ready for state. This was a major goal for her.”
Portela won the 100 butterfly in 57.35, while Clark won the 100 backstroke in 58.77. Moore also swam a season-best in a second-place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.30).
“I think everybody has really put in the time and the workouts, and that’s really going to show their strength and speed at the end,” McDonald said.
Lawrence High’s best finish was Heather Cistola taking fourth in the 200 free (1:59.85) and 500 free (5:20.26) and Jessica Boyer placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.41). Boyer’s time was her best of the season.
“I was pretty pleased with the team placing,” LHS coach Kent McDonald said. “There were some teams we beat that had beaten us earlier in the regular season. This was a good meet for us.”
The state swim meet will take place May 20 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
