An herbicide leak from a truck shut down a portion of East 250 Road near the intersection of County Road 442 in Kanwaka Township on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the scene around 4 p.m., after the driver of a Lone Pine Ag-Services truck reported herbicide leaking from the vehicle, said Doug Green, division chief for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

Green said there were no injuries as a result of the leak.

“The quantity wasn’t that great. About 40 gallons,” Green said. Crews were using special absorbents to soak up the herbicide and excavating the affected soil, he said.

Area resident Will Orvedal, who lives close to the site, said he had some concerns about the effects of the leak.

“This stuff can get in the water supply,” he said. As of 8 p.m. Saturday, Orvedal said crews were still out on the road cleaning up the herbicide. Green said he expected the road to be re-opened shortly.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment was contacted about the incident, Green said.

Lone Pine Ag-Services is an agricultural supply company based in Lecompton.
