Two Lawrence men were treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital Thursday morning after suffering stab wounds during a family-related altercation. Police arrested two men after the incident.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1700 block of West 24th Street about 3:15 a.m. in reference to an unknown emergency.

When officers first arrived at the scene, they observed several individuals involved in a physical altercation in a hallway. Hadl said the incident was believed to have started when two of the men engaged in an argument.

One of the men was the other’s soon-to-be brother-in-law. Hadl said the argument had escalated into a physical altercation and two more family members became involved.

The altercation continued to escalate until one man, believed to be a 27-year-old Lawrence resident, grabbed a knife. The man proceeded to injure the three other men. Hadl said two of the brothers, a 23 and 26-year-old, sustained serious injuries from the knife during the incident while the other received a laceration but refused treatment.

The two brothers were transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released Thursday morning.

Police arrested 27-year-old Misael Alonzo Martinez on charges of aggravated battery and disorderly conduct. One of the brothers, 23-year-old Juan Hernandez, was arrested on charges of battery.
