A.G.: Don’t take a break from safety
Another college break is just weeks away and state authorities are urging students to be vigilant during summer break.
“We try to make students in Manhattan and KU aware that we’ve had a pattern of what we think is a connected series of rapes that have occurred during breaks in the school year,” said Kansas Attorney General Steven Six. “It’s a time when there are fewer people around town and some of the apartment complexes are less occupied and you need to be vigilant.”
The last rape in Lawrence occurred during 2008 Thanksgiving break. Breaks are a time, Six said, when college-aged women should make sure to keep their guards up.
“As you can imagine, 13 rapes is 13 victims and their families and there’s just tons of devastation that comes with that,” said Six.
Six was in Lawrence to talk at the Douglas County Bar Association’s 51st annual Law Day.
