Kansas City, Kan. ? A federal agency official in Kansas has been convicted of taking more than $47,000 in pay for hours he didn’t work.

Prosecutors say 53-year-old Olathe resident Herman S. Ransom spent some of his scheduled working hours gambling or playing tennis.

Ransom was paid $129,000 a year as a director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Kansas City, Kan.

A U.S. District Court jury found him guilty Monday of 10 counts of wire fraud and 10 counts of theft of public funds.

Prosecutors said Ransom sometimes turned in reports claiming he worked 40 hours a week when in fact he had been absent without approval.
