Aluminum cans stolen from humane society

The recycled aluminum can bin at the Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th St., was broken into late Tuesday or early Wednesday, and cans valued at $75 were stolen.

The bin typically holds about $300 worth of recycled aluminum, which the shelter cashes in and uses for spaying and neutering animals from across the community. Shelter Director Midge Grinstead says this isn’t the first time thieves have stolen the cans. This time, a strong padlock on the enclosed container was broken.

The Lawrence Humane Society collects about $7,000 a year from donated aluminum cans. Grinstead says anyone who would like to make a donation to make up for the loss can do so at the shelter’s east Lawrence location.
