Journal-World All-Area Girls Basketball First Team

Chantay Caron, senior, Free State

The area’s top all-around player. Averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while anchoring the Firebirds’ press. Finished with team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds in sub-state championship game victory over Shawnee Mission West to lead Free State to its first Class 6A state tournament berth in three years. Will play basketball at Kansas State next year. Journal-World’s player of the year.

Ashli Hill, senior, Free State

Defensive dynamo averaged 9.7 points per game and a Sunflower League-best 10.2 rebounds, while setting the school record for blocked shots. Finished with 10 blocks in sub-state final victory and seven in regular-season finale win over Lawrence High. Played great down the stretch in helping the Firebirds qualify for the state tournament. Will play basketball at UMKC next season.

Missy Rome, senior, McLouth

Averaged 17.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.6 steals and four assists per game this season, leading McLouth to 14 victories — the second-highest total in school history. Was an all-state third-team selection last season. Has averaged 17.3 points per game over her career and will graduate with school career records for points, steals, assists, and three-point field goals.

Haley Parker, senior, Lawrence High

Led Lions with 12 points per game to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Was named to the all-tournament team in the Capital City Classic this season and has earned a scholarship to play basketball at Emporia State next season.

Hailey Kelly, junior, Oskaloosa

Talented point guard finished with per-game averages of 14.1 points, five assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals. One of Oskaloosa’s top offensive threats, is a skilled ball-handler and has shown an ability to facilitate teammates, as well. Previously named an all-area selection.

Ramie Burkhart, junior, Baldwin

A 5-foot-10 forward, Burkhart averaged 11.2 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals a game this season. Was named to the Wellsville Top Gun all-tournament team.

Jessica Christman, senior, Perry-Lecompton

In her first season as a starter, averaged 10 points and a team-high 8.6 rebounds a game for the Kaws, who enjoyed their best season in more than 10 years. Was named to the 2010 JCN Invitational all-tournament team and was named the team’s most improved player from ’09.

Jordan Baldwin, sophomore, Ottawa

Picked up where she left off following an all-state honorable mention nod in ’08-09. Finished the season averaging 13.2 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals per game, while shooting 76-percent from the free-throw line.

Kearsten Peoples, senior, Ottawa

Forward provided dominant post presence for Ottawa this season, averaging 12.7 points and 8.5 rebounds a contest. A two-time Ottawa Herald all-area member.

Jasmyn Turner, senior, Lawrence High

Averaged 7.5 points, six rebounds and four steals a game this season for the Lions. Served as a team captain, and recorded a triple-double against Wichita North on Jan. 28 (18 points, 12 rebounds, 10 steals).
