City engineers are seeking public comment about adding a center turn lane and making other improvements to Iowa Street between Yale Road and the Irving Hill overpass.
The city will take comment at a meeting at 6 p.m. on March 29 at Fire Station No. 5, 1911 Stewart Avenue.
One of the primary proposals under consideration is to add a center turn lane that would more easily allow motorists to turn into the adjacent neighborhoods.
For people unable to attend the meeting, comments may be sent by e-mail to City Engineer Shoeb Uddin at suddin@ci.lawrence.ks.us.

make it a no left turn from iowa st just like on 23rd st. as it is the idiots don't use their signals and hit the brakes at the last minute.no need for a turn lane just go on down to 15th st and turn.

I think it is a good idea. Nothing is more irritating than to be in the fast lane heading south and have to come to a complete stop behind someone turning left toward the campus.

This would greatly improve traffic flow. However, if this does not happen then a "No Left Turn" during peak hours would also help.

Fast lane? lol.
On-topic: Yes, adding a center turn lane there would be a good idea.

I was rear-ended on this stretch of road in 1992. At the time, I was told by the city that accidents like mine happened all the time and plans were in place to add a left turn lane.
Progress.

A center turn lane between Harvard Rd. and 23rd St. would be appropriate. Would even help during KU ballgame traffic.
Yes, Curtis - the fast lane. As in the people who want to poke along below the speed limit should use the right lane, and those who wish to drive the speed limit should use the left lane. Similar to the highways

perosnally, I think that there should be a stop light on Louisana and 31st.

The city works on Iowa Street every year, you would think they would get it right soomer or later.

cheeseburger: I was lol'ing because there is no such thing as a 'fast lane,' city street or otherwise. The left lane on the highway is the passing lane, plain and simple. Not making a pass, get in the right lane. Drive right, pass left doesn't work on city streets due to all the left turns people have to make.

@ KUweatherman - So is it okay to call center (left) turn lanes suicide lanes, since the original suicide lane was a passing lane?

I agree, do away with any left turns or install a designated left turn lane.
