Northeast Kansas police investigate marijuana shipments

A Basehor woman was startled to find a shipment of marijuana at her front door.

March 16, 2010

— A Basehor resident who recently alerted police after finding an unexpected package on her doorstep has supplied vital information in a drug investigation.

Basehor Police Chief Lloyd Martley said police departments in Basehor, Lenexa, Shawnee and Kansas City, Kan., are pursuing the arrest of a 36-year-old Shawnee resident suspected of orchestrating the transfer of drugs and receipt of drugs through the mail.

Martley said his department received a call Friday from a Basehor woman who reported FedEx had delivered a strange package to her house. The package had her address on it, but a company name was displayed on the box.

Inside the box, Martley said, the woman found a large sealed bucket. Deciding something was amiss, she contacted police, who began tracing the return address information.

“It was a totally bogus company,” Martley said.

The address listed for the fake sending company belonged to a junior college in Glendale, Ariz., and the phone number was a Phoenix listing.

Police found 14 pounds of marijuana inside the five-gallon bucket. The department contacted FedEx and learned about the three other police departments' efforts to stop drug deliveries from the same fake company to residences in their cities. Martley said each package was formatted to look like two companies exchanging cleaning supplies. The packages were usually intercepted after drop-off before homeowners could discover them, he said.

“The suspect would wait and watch the delivery being made, and then he'd grab the package,” Martley said. “But with this woman, she wasn't home, and her neighbors were outside, so he couldn't take the box.”

Martley said FedEx reported two additional deliveries were slated for nearby residences before police stopped the process. The marijuana in the five-gallon bucket alone was worth about $26,800 if sold on the street, Martley said, and if the two other deliveries had been successful, an additional $53,600 in drugs would have entered the area.

“This resident really did the right thing reporting the package to the police,” Martley said.

In total, 12 to 14 packages were delivered from the false company to addresses in the Kansas City metropolitan area, Martley said.

The case has been turned over to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the attorney general's office, Martley said. No arrests have been made.

The above comment makes no sense. So I'm guessing that it's now cool to open mail that isn't addressed to you? Last I had heard that it was unlawful to open mail that wasn't yours. Just saying.

At lease they should hire better help that could get the address right and have their pick-up guy waiting and watching for the Fed-ex truck.

They just have too much drugs and not enough brains and you can't get anyone nowadays to a dam thing right. Lol.

Did I read that right? The geniuses at the Basehor Police Department actually told Fed Ex NOT to deliver the other two packages?

They should have let the packages be delivered, staked out the residence, and then arrested whoever came to pick the packages up.

I know a guy who knows a guy that get 5lbs of novelty lighters shipped to him every few weeks. Since Kansas had the forsight to ban the lighters, the street price has gone way way up. In fact, a new hello kitty and yoda lighter now go for $15 a gram

O no! A scary shipment of harmless plant material!! Everybody at once! be diverted from real crimes to punish society for what it will continue to do until the end of time! Sell and consume herb! I just watched a documentary about prohibition on liquor and the percentage of people who consumed alcohol during prohibition (when it was illegal to drink) absolutely skyrocketed, and guess how the criminals were made? That ridiculous law that created the mob and the underground sale itself; the mob are murderers by the way, yes you the law directly created them. Amerka too proud and awesome to realize what harm and ridiculousness that it maintains by it's prohibition on cannabis; without this law many a life would be normal today. Someday when a brighter generation rolls around they will laugh and laugh at history and make this country a better place by using their common horse sense to reform the out-of-date laws that only came about via corporate greed. I hope I get to live during that generation’s time.

"Perhaps you would like to have it added to school lunch programs along side the salt and pepper?"

-They could make a salad with it maybe? I hear the leaves are healthy. The paper those kids use at school; one acre of hemp yields the same amount as 4 acres of trees.

actually studies have shown that pot cookies have been a great natural way to treat ADHD children. Its actually healthier than giving a child medication every day.

Christine Anderson 8 years, 2 months ago

Lawthing, just how much did you smoke before writing that? So, we can just start handing our kids a joint if they have ADHD? Dummy.

Bladerunner 8 years, 2 months ago

I wonder what drug dealer conducted that study? Who tests marijuana on children? Nobody of course. Bogus study. Bogus facts. Nice try lawthing........Were not buying what your selling.

Treating ADHD with pot is stupid. But can you believe what they actually do prescribe kids for ADHD?

"The marijuana in the five-gallon bucket alone was worth about $26,800 if sold on the street, Martley said, and if the two other deliveries had been successful, an additional $53,600 in drugs would have entered the area."

If these drugs had been sold legitimately through regulation and taxation, $80,000 would have remained in the local economy, and an additional $5,600 would have been collected in taxes from the direct sale. This is small potatoes in the world of marijuana. There are nearly 22,000 metric tons of marijuana available the US annually. When will the government get over their lie and regulate this high-demand product?

Stuart Evans 8 years, 2 months ago

actually there are some recent studies that show ADHD can be helped with cannabis, as they mimic the endocannabanoid system within the human body. I would much prefer trying to treat ADHD with marijuana than with the current dosing of methamphetamines. (don't believe me? look it up)

THC is already naturally produced in the human brain. Marijuana is non-toxic and only raises the THC already inside of every single human being of all ages.

All the American forefathers DID SMOKE cannabis and hasheesh was the number one prescribed pain relief medication, it was even given to women during childbirth! You could pay your taxes with cannabis up to the 1820's.

It is illegal because of the sulphuric-process of changing wood to paper is more profitable to big business and D.C.

So if it is not re-legalized, then all of the problems that are caused by NOT using it for it's material and medicinal functions will only grow and you will be enslaved by higher taxes and legislation of Big Brother to invade YOUR homes to search for the harmless plant.

Tell your kids and others that they are bad for smoking pot and you are turning your back on George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, both who wrote in their journals about the growing, harvesting and even smoking of cannabis.

Check the facts. Alcohol kills more humans than marijuana and today that will be proven because of all the alcohol-related activity of St. Patrick's Day.

Stuart Evans 8 years, 2 months ago

well none2, thank you for making a mockery of this. Now what are your real beliefs as to what marijuana is good for and what the harms are?

Ricky_Vaughn 8 years, 2 months ago

If the right person would have found that bucket, we'd have never heard about this.

AreUNormal, YourGOD and Vertigo are right. I'd give a kid a pot brownie before the pharma poisons that so many energetic kids get fed any day.
