Vital services

To the editor:

I’m writing in regard to the article that was published in the Lawrence Journal-World on March 2.

Having a traumatic brain injury myself, I can relate to how important the services that Communityworks Inc. provides to 80 people here in Lawrence, Kansas, really are.

After having been on the same roller coaster ride from hell, I can understand the frustration that most of the people with traumatic brain injury have had to deal with.

Due to all the budget-cutting in the state’s Medicaid programs, it’s more difficult for people like myself to obtain these services.

While working with the people with Communityworks Inc., I was able to obtain services with the Kansas University speech and language department. This was very helpful with my cognitive rehabilitation and my awareness of people with traumatic brain injury. Before receiving services from KU and Communityworks, I did not know that much about my injury and the results from having a traumatic brain injury. I was at the mercy of other people’s assistance, and I felt I was unable to be a vital part of my community. We can’t afford any more cuts in these services.
