Real investment

To the editor:

The dire choices facing Kansas were vividly outlined by Gov. Parkinson last week (Journal-World, March 5). Hard choices are likely to continue in the next few years, and if you believe that research and technological innovation will lead to “growth” that will make tough choices disappear, you must believe in the tooth fairy.

Sen. Sam Brownback apparently does believe in the tooth fairy. Last month in Lawrence (Journal-World, Feb. 12) he said that technological development will result in growth that will make choices about increasing taxes and/or cutting support for education unnecessary.

The good senator wants to be governor. But he doesn’t seem to comprehend that sound investments in education — public and higher — transportation and social services are the foundation for economic growth and improved opportunities for our children and grandchildren.

Brownback has spent lots of time in recent years outside Kansas — in Washington, D.C., and Iowa — and one wonders if he understands that leadership, not wishful thinking, is needed for a brighter future for Kansas.
