FSHS boys 3rd; LHS 5th at state bowling

March 5, 2010

— The Free State High boys bowling team took third place, while Lawrence High placed fifth on Thursday in the Class 6A state tournament at North Rock Lanes.

Lawrence High’s Ben Wyatt was the city’s high individual finisher at fifth overall with a 704 series.

“It was really nice to see him do that because he’s really worked hard and he was rewarded nicely for his efforts,” LHS coach Tom Birt said.

Wyatt, a senior, was the only Lawrence High boy to qualify for state in all four years.

Connor Kring led Free State with a 677 series. The top 20 individual finishers received medals. Kring finished 14th, while teammate Joel Bonner (656 series) finished 20th.

“Connor struggled in his last few outings,” Free State coach Anita Carlson said. “We worked with him and man, he tore it up. He had a will to succeed and not give up. I’m extremely proud of him.”

Free State’s third-place finish was its highest finish since 2006, when the Firebirds placed second.

The girls portion of the state tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. today.

Congrats to both teams on your success. It's tough to go to Wichita and compete against those teams in their own centers.

Really impressed with how quickly Ben was able to "rebuild" his game. A couple of little changes and a lot of hard work really paid off.
