Lax enforcement

To the editor:

What are the rules of the road anymore? Many in this town either have not properly learned them or feel they don’t pertain to them.

What am I speaking of? Well let’s just start with one, red light running. With every light cycle, you see so many who push or flat-out run the red. Many times it has happened right in front of our police with no consequence. This bothered me so I called the Lawrence police. My question for them was: What do they considered running a traffic signal?

The answer I got was somewhat worrisome. It was explained to me, it’s up to the officer’s interpretation. So let me get this correct: The light is red or turning red and you’re still entering the intersection, but depending on the officer it may OK? Do we have our officers so bogged down with paperwork that they will only write a ticket, if that ticket is a slam dunk? If true, then we have some serious issues which need addressing.

There are so many in this town who apparently don’t know the rules of the road or don’t care; we need to educate them with a ticket. A few hits to the pocketbook, do have a way of bringing many to their senses.

Then we can move on to school zones, not signaling lane changes and explaining how a stop sign isn’t the same as a yield sign.
