KU women face tall order at NU

Kansas’ Carolyn Davis, left, gets tangled up with Colorado’s Brittany Spears during the first half. Davis was 10-for-10 from the field and scored 28 points as KU won, 79-72, on Tuesday in Boulder, Colo.

It’s certainly not over until it’s over, but the outlook isn’t rosy for Kansas University’s women’s basketball team.

The Jayhawks, who have dropped five of their last seven since Danielle McCray’s season-ending knee injury, need two wins this week in order to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Both those games, however, are against ranked teams — unbeaten and No. 3-ranked Nebraska tonight on the road and No. 15 Texas A&M on Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse.

Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb. The game won’t be televised and the Jayhawk Network radio broadcast will be delayed because of the KU-KSU men’s game.

With such a daunting task ahead, KU coach Bonnie Henrickson stresses her players can’t afford to dwell on the opponents or the NCAA scenario.

“We have to take care of ourselves,” Henrickson said.

The Jayhawks (15-12) are coming off their worst performance since McCray’s injury — a 70-47 swoon at No. 14-ranked Baylor on Sunday — yet hope for a better showing tonight.

“I still have total confidence in my team,” said freshman forward Carolyn Davis who has become KU’s go-to player since McCray went down. “They’re fighters. We need to regroup and not dwell on (the Baylor) game.”

Nebraska (27-0) came to Lawrence a couple of weeks ago, and had to rally late to post a 67-60 victory and maintain their perfect record.

“We have to have some confidence from playing them well here,” Henrickson said. “But we have to cut back on late turnovers and giving them offensive rebounds.”
