To the editor:

Monday morning, I was at Dillons on 23rd Street to purchase the New York Times and a tall cup of coffee at Starbucks. An attractive young woman (blonde) brought me the coffee and saw the paper and the four-column picture on the front page and asked me, “What is that?”

I said, “It is showing the devastation from the 8.8 earthquake in Chile.” She says, “Wow! I didn’t know there was an earthquake in Chile!”

I explained how everyone was watching the results on TV and watching for the tsunami in Hawaii. Then I asked if she was a student at KU, and she was. It is nice to be young, attractive, and free as the wind without a care in the world.

Next time a girl turns me down for a date I'm going to write an LTE complaining about it too.

Monday morning.....a KU student working on a Monday morning before class?........she could be in $urvival mode rather than carefree with time to spare for TV watching/newspaper reading. Remember, she did notice the NYTimes you were holding as she handed you your morning coffee treat.

If she was working she was not being carefree. I would be willing to bet this young woman (blonde) has a lot of cares in her life, not the least of which is going to be remarks from her co-workers after they read this letter.
If you want to lead the carefree life get a job at Dillons. :-)

I guess that explains how government programs continue forever despite their objective failure, how money buys politicians to do what money wants, how our leaders make monumental military blunders but declare victory anyway, and how corporations fund 'grass roots' tea parties.

In other words, democratic government, self-rule by an engaged, educated, and informed electorate, remains as it has always been: an uncertain experiment.

She's in college, working at Starbucks, and providing condescending idiots like the letter-writer hot coffee. Maybe, Richard, she just didn't want to talk to her because she sensed you were an arrogant know-it-all.

Maybe her cable is screwing up as much as mine has been the last few days.

I'd probably watch a lot more news coverage if it would stop doing this Poltegeist thing it has been doing the last few days.

I turn on MSNBC first thing and have it on for quite a while. I like the anchors as for the most part they say what I would say under the same circumstances.
My faves are Tamyrn Hall and Chris Matthews.

The earthquake occurred on February 27, right? A weekend. And the rest of the world found out friday/saturday/sunday - I am not good with timezones and etc. A KU student didn't know what it was on Monday morning. Why is that surprising? Do you expect them to read the paper and listen to the news on the weekend? I read the paper, but I am old. I have a kid in college who likes world events and reads the news and knew about it. But we didn't watch round the clock coverage. Give the kid a break. I am sure it was mentioned in one of her classes later in the day.

As a girl who works with the girl mentioned in the above letter, I would just like to say how absolutely disgusted I am with the "gentleman" who wrote it. How dare you make an assumption about her intelligence and work ethic in the probably 5 minutes that you spoke to her. So maybe she hadn't yet heard about the earthquake, could it be because between working almost full time and taking a full class load she didn't have time? Maybe next time you get a cup of coffee you could try not being so arrogant and sure of your superiority towards others in the world around you.
