Firefighters and emergency personnel work the scene of an apartment fire in the 1000 block of W. 24th Street behind the 23rd Street Dillon's store. The fire started in a basement apartment and was quickly controlled.

A fire Wednesday caused residents to be evacuated from their apartment building in the 1000 block of West 24th Street.

The fire started in a basement apartment just before 11 a.m. Twelve units were impacted by the fire, and two had severe damage.

David Kurn, a resident in the complex, said he was warned by a neighbor who smelled the smoke and was going door-to-door to alert tenants.

Because of the smoke, residents won’t be able to return to their units until today.

Jane Blocher, executive director for the Douglas County American Red Cross, said the agency would provide lodging to all the tenants for Wednesday night.

No one was injured, and smoke inside the building subsided. There is no visible structure damage to the outside of the building.

The cause and damage estimates of the fire are still under investigation.
