Singled out

To the editor:

Why is it that people are so careful not to offend any racial or religious group except Catholics?

Certainly some very bad things were done by a very small minority of Catholic priests. But we see the media revisiting these same stories over and over. They have tried hard to implicate Pope Benedict in a cover-up, even though the facts prove he has done nothing wrong.

The front-page article in the June 23 Journal-World is an example of this sort of muckraking. The article simply revisited old stories.

Other organizations, such as schools and Boy Scouts, have had similar abuse problems, but we don’t hear nearly so much about them.

I can think of two reasons for this anti-Catholic prejudice. One is the legacy from European politics of the 15th and 16th centuries. The other is the fact that the church refuses to compromise its moral principles to conform to popular culture.
